Decarbonisation

Picture of the sea

Climate change is recognised as the most serious and threatening global environmental problem. There is scientific agreement that humans are contributing to climate change through the emission of greenhouse gases. In Ireland, approximately 60% of greenhouse gas emissions derive from energy related uses in the following sectors:

  • residential
  • transport
  • industrial
  • commercial

These sectors rely on fossil fuels.

Ireland supports the EU ambition on climate and energy. We are committed to making a contribution that is technically feasible, cost-effective and fair in terms of the distribution of the levels of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels across Member States.
Reducing our reliance on fossil fuels will require more efficient use of energy. It will also enhance our energy security and help support economic activity.

Details on what we are doing to improve is availabe in our energy efficiency section
